In an attempt to establish that alleged fake encounter victim Sadiq Jamal Mehtar was illegally detained by the Mumbai Police before he was handed over to the Gujarat police and subsequently killed, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has questioned two suspended Mumbai Police encounter specialists Daya Nayak and Sachin Vaze at its Navi Mumbai office.
While Nayak was questioned for over five hours on Thursday,Vaze was grilled on Wednesday.
After recording statements of Gujarat officers, the CBI has started its probe in the city by summoning officers who were allegedly instrumental in handing Sadiq to the Gujarat police in 2003. The controversial encounter of Sadiq had allegedly taken place near Galaxy Cinema in Naroda.
According to the Gujarat Police,Sadik was part of a terrorist conspiracy to kill Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi.
According to the FIR filed by the CBI,the Gujarat polices claim does not hold any water as they were not able to furnish any substantial evidence to support their claims. According to the police,Sadik had gone to Gujarat to kill the chief minister with a country-made pistol.
In its FIR,the CBI has stated that Nayak had allegedly handed over Sadik to the Gujarat police. Nayaks alleged role in the case surfaced when Mumbai-based former journalist Ketan Tirodkar filed an affidavit before the Gujarat High Court. In it,Tirodkar alleged that Sadik was actually handed over to Gujarat police by Nayak a couple of days before he was encountered.
In the affidavit,Tirodkar said that he and Sadik met each other when the former went to Dubai to meet one Tariq Parveen. At that time Sadik was working as a domestic help at Tariqs residence.
While the CBI is trying to probe Nayaks role,Vaze apparently was questioned as he belonged to the same police unit as Nayaks. It is the units movement that we are trying to establish, a CBI officer confirmed.
