Welcoming the decision to nominate cricketer Sachin Tendulkar to Rajya Sabha,Maharashtra Navnirman Sena chief Raj Thackeray said it was an ‘honour’ for his talent and should not be politicised.

Thackeray said, like Tendulkar, singer Lata Mangeshkar had also been nominated to the RS earlier and it did not mean that these personalities would start campaigning for the government, which recommended their nominations. He said the central government had made the recommendation and not just the Congress. “I don’t think we need to bring politics into it. ,” said Thackeray, who had felicitated Tendulkar two years ago with an engraved sword.

He said people like Tendulkar are not expected to attend RS all the time. He argued that when Tendulkar was awarded Indian Air Force’s honorary rank of Group Captain,it did not mean that he would fly aircraft.

He said people like Tendulkar have crossed boundaries and should be honoured but questioned the contribution made by actor Saif Ali Khan to be awarded the Padma Shri.

Asked about Rahul Gandhi’s tour of drought hit regions of the state,Thackeray questioned the point of visiting one area. “After UP and Punjab,Rahul seems to be targeting Maharashtra for his hat-trick on failures,” he said.
