The police on Friday said actor Ronit Roy,who was arrested on Thursday for allegedly ramming his Mercedes into a Wagon R and injuring four people,had gone home without informing them about the accident after he had escorted the victims to a hospital in a taxi.
Those travelling in the other vehicle were injured in the accident,with two of them suffering serious injuries.
Roy had got out of his car after the accident and,along with the two victims who suffered minor injuries,took the seriously injured to Kokilaben Ambani Hospital in a taxi and got them admitted there. He allegedly went to his Yari Road residence in a taxi after this,leaving his Mercedes at the scene of the accident. After visiting the hospital,the police had gone to the residence of the 40-year-old actor and arrested him on charges of rash and negligent driving causing grievous injury,and fleeing without informing the police.
Inspector V Rathod of Amboli police said they knew about the incident from the hospital. The victims told us that Ronit Roy was driving the other car. We arrested him from his residence. He is now out on bail.
Police said the accident took place around 6 am near the Sab TV building on Veera Desai Road in Andheri (West). The actor was on his way for a shoot in Kandivali from a gym in Andheri. Roy said in his statement that he was driving straight,when he saw a car coming out from the left to take a turn. Roy,who was allegedly speeding,could not control his car and rammed into the vehicle. Police said the occupants of the other car Deepak Darera (60),his wife Kaanta (56) and daughters Sneha (29) and Pooja (24) who stay in Andheris Shashtri Nagar area,were on their way for a picnic to Matheran.
Kaanta suffered severe injuries on her back while Pooja has stitches on her head and Deepak is injured in his hand. Sneha received minor injuries. Both Kaanta and Pooja are now out of danger. While Pooja has been shifted to BSES MG Hospital in Andheri (East),Kaanta is being treated at Kokilaben Ambani Hospital.
After he was arrested,Roy was sent for a medical test and cleared of drink driving charges. Police sources,however,said the alcohol consumption test was conducted six hours after the accident,as Roy had gone back to his residence without informing the police. He was presented before a holiday court in Bandra on Thursday afternoon,where he was released on a bail bond of Rs 12,000. He was granted bail as all the charges under which he has been booked are bailable, senior inspector H Vhatkar of Amboli police said.
Roy refused to speak about the accident. He has acted in TV serials like Kyunkii Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi,Bandini and Adaalat besides several Bollywood movies. He had won the Filmfare award for the best supporting actor for his role in Hindi movie Udaan.
