Former police commissioner Julio Ribeiro criticised the police for ignoring Mohalla committees, saying such committees were the eyes and ears of the police and would provide vital intelligence reports to them. He was addressing a press meet on security issues on Friday.
Since police commissioner Arup Patnaik took charge, the police has not been very vocal in their support for Mohalla committees, with some officers alleging that members of such committees often misuse their powers. Ribeiro, however, said it was important for police to ensure that citizens trust them. There has to be a lot of respect and understanding between police and citizens. Earlier,Mohalla Committees would work closely with the police, but that has stopped now, said Ribeiro,Every time an attack is carried out the minority section of society feels vulnerable. When terrorist activities were rampant in Punjab, police had to win the trust of Sikhs to fight terrorists.
Former CBI director Joginder Singh said local intelligence must be high.
