76-year-old retired policeman killed, 1 injured in Mulund hit-and-run case; accused arrested

A 76-year-old man died and another sustained injuries after a car rammed into them in Mumbai’s Mulund area. The accused was eventually arrested by the Mulund police.

The deceased, who was identified as a retired policeman named Tukaram Sawant, was out for a walk when the incident took place. Meanwhile, the other person who was injured in the hit-and-run case was a scooty rider, who was rushed to a local hospital soon after.

According to the Mulund police, the incident took place around 8pm on BP road in Mulund when the car that was going at high speed knocked down a biker and a pedestrian. The four wheeler then rammed into a divider following which occupants of the car fled from the spot.

Sawant was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was declared dead. The biker too was admitted to a private hospital where he is undergoing treatment.

An FIR was registered by the Mulund police. The accused in the case was later identified as 22-year-old Amresh Yadav, a resident of Mulund Colony.

The police registered a case against him under sections 279 (rash driving), 304A (death due to negligence), 337 (causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others), and 338 (causing grievous hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) of the Indian Penal Code and section 184 (driving dangerously) of Motor Vehicle Act 1988.
