The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP),the main opposition party in the state legislature, has demanded that Congress MLA Kripashankar Singh should either resign from his membership of the legislature or the Congress should seek his resignation.
The Bombay High Court had on Wednesday directed Mumbai Police Commissioner Arup Patnaik to investigate the alleged disproportionate assets of Singh and his family members and prosecute him for criminal misconduct under the Prevention of Corruption Act,1988.
Hours after the ruling, the Congress announced that Singh had quit his post but said he had sent in his resignation last week in the aftermath of the partys poor show in the civic elections. The resignation had been accepted, the Congress said.
The resignation of Singh from the post of Mumbai president is not enough. He must resign from the Assembly as the petition is related to the affidavit he filed during his election, said BJP spokesperson Madhav Bhandari.
He said the petition in the High Court was related to the affidavit filed by Singh during his election to the Assembly. If he does not quit on his own,we expect the Congress to ask him to quit, said Bhandari.
