With the multifold rise in population in the extended suburbs of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, commuters have for long been demanding that the Railways upgrade its infrastructure accordingly. The commuters’ agitation at Diva station on June 4 against the Railways slackness in finishing the foot over bridge (FoB) was a reminder to the authorities about the pending projects.
Diva, once a marshy land and a mangrove haven between densely populated satellite cities of Thane and Dombivali, has grown demographically over the last five years. Though the population has increased and so has the revenue, the basic rail infrastructure has not been upgraded to meet the demands of commuters.
The FoB at Nallasopara station, which was awarded in 2009,at the cost of Rs 6.21 crore is yet to see the light of the day. At Nallasopara station, there is only one FOB and commuters who reside at the south-end face a lot of problems.
Sanjay Master,a Nalasopara resident, said,“Railways is not concerned about our problems. When the FoB has been sanctioned and the work has already started, what is the problem in completing it in time?”
