For reconstruction: Mumbai’s Elphinstone Bridge to be closed for 2 years from today; traffic advisory issued
Ahead of the closure of the bridge, Mumbai Traffic Police issued an advisory for the commuters and public regarding the traffic changes.
For those traveling towards Worli and Prabhadevi, the journey is direct from Parel TT through Ambedkar Road to Krishna Nagar Junction, Parel Workshop, and Supari Baug Junction. The Elphinstone Bridge in Mumbai will remain closed for two years from Thursday for its demolition and reconstruction.
The reconstruction of the century-old Road Over Bridge (ROB) between Parel and Prabhadevi in central Mumbai is part of the Sewri-Worli Elevated Connector venture of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA).
Ahead of the closure of the bridge, Mumbai Traffic Police issued an advisory for the commuters and public regarding the traffic changes.
Pradip Chavan, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Traffic issued these restrictions under section 115 of Motor Vehicles Act 1988.
Drivers going towards Dadar West are required to make a right from Parel TT Junction, follow Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Road, make a left from Dadar TT Junction, go over Tilak Bridge, and continue towards their destination.
For those traveling towards Worli and Prabhadevi, the journey is direct from Parel TT through Ambedkar Road to Krishna Nagar Junction, Parel Workshop, and Supari Baug Junction.
From Bharat Mata Junction, the vehicles have to turn right on Mahadev Palav Road, cross the Currey Road Railway Bridge, turn right at Shingte Master Chowk, and proceed through the Lower Parel Bridge.
Traffic coming from Elphinstone Bridge towards Parel should proceed straight at Elphinstone Junction, take a left turn at Wadacha Naka Junction, then take Lower Parel Bridge and Mahadev Palav Road through Currey Road Bridge to arrive at Bharat Mata Junction.
Another option is from Elphinstone Junction through Wadacha Naka Junction, Lower Parel Bridge and NM Joshi Road to Chinchpokli Junction and then taking left for Sane Guruji Road crossing Chinchpokli Bridge and going through Sant Jagnade Chowk.
Currey Road railway bridge will permit only one-way traffic from 7 am to 3 pm (Shingte Master Chowk to Bharat Mata Junction) and reverse from 3 pm to 11 pm. It will be two-way from 11 pm to 7 am.
In order to minimise congestion, parking will not be allowed on sections of NM Joshi Marg, Senapati Bapat Marg, Mahadev Palav Marg, Salve Guruji Marg, Bhavani Shankar Marg, and Raghobaksha SK Bola Marg.
The commuters can utilise the foot overbridge between Parel and Prabhadevi railway stations at One International Centre.
Two ambulances, one at each side of Parel and Prabhadevi, have been deployed by the MMRDA, which will be ready for emergency situations during the construction duration.
“Drivers are asked to stick to signboards and announcements by the Mumbai Traffic Police so as not to experience any jams and have a smooth ride,” said the advisory.
The current 13-metre-wide Elphinstone bridge to be demolished has 1.5 lanes on each side — a 1.5-lane bridge is designed to allow two lanes of light vehicles but is too narrow for two large vehicles to pass side by side safely. Its removal will give place to a new double decker bridge that promises to vastly enhance the east-west linkages of the city.
