Mohammad Farid Shaikh (29) alias Farid Mawali accused of raping an eleven year old girl in April last year was arrested by the Anti-Robbery Cell of the Mumbai Police Crime Branch on Monday after he escaped in April this year after he was produced at the Sessions Court
We were on the lookout for Shaikh. We received information on Monday that Shaikh would come to Central Mumbais Sion area near the Cinemax Multiplex. A team of officers and personnel were put on the job and a trap was laid. When Shaikh came to the spot,he was immediately nabbed by us, said a Crime Branch officer.
The officer said that Shaikh told the police that he escaped as he feared that he would be sentenced to imprisonment for a long time by the court for the rape.
He claims that there was strong evidence against him and that he did not want to be sentenced to imprisonment, said the officer.
Shaikh has been handed over to the local police, who will present him before the court. He has eight cases registered against him and he has been held guilty in five of those offences by the court.
Shaikh was arrested by the Mahim Police last year after a complaint was registered against him by the victims mother.
In her complaint to the police, the victims mother had said that Shaikh had threatened the girls mother and neighbours with a knife, before taking the girl to a secluded spot where he allegedly raped her.
He was remanded to judicial custody, and was brought for a hearing to the Sessions Court on April 18 when he escaped.
