Ram Gopal Varma sentenced to 3 months-jail in cheque bounce case

A magistrate court in Mumbai’s Andheri convicted and sentenced director Ram Gopal Varma to three months simple imprisonment in a cheque bounce case.
The court also directed him to pay a compensation of Rs. 3.72 lakh to the complainant in the case within three months. If the fine is not paid, the court said Varma will have to spend another three months in jail. Since Varma was not present in court on the day of the judgment, the court issued a non-bailable warrant against him.
The case relates to a complaint filed by a company named Shree through Maheshchandra Mishra against Varma’s firm. It was filed under the provisions of the Negotiable Instruments Act pertaining to cheque bounce due to insufficient funds or other reasons.
The complainant firm, through their lawyers Rajesh Patel and Alok Singh, said they had provided hard disks to Varma from February to March 2018 and had raised tax invoices of Rs 2.38 lakh for the supply to his production company. A cheque dated June 1, 2018, was issued to the firm but when it was deposited, the cheque bounced due to insufficient funds. When it was informed to him, another cheque was issued dated August 22, 2018. However, that too was dishonoured, said the lawyers.
“With regard to the news about me and Andheri court, I want to clarify that it is to do with a 7-year-old case of Rs 2 lakh 38 thousand amount, relating to my ex-employee .. My advocates are attending to it. Since the matter is in court, I cannot say anything further,” Varma said in a post on X.
