The BJP alleged on Thursday that Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhis rally at Panvel breached the model code of conduct as it was held in a silent zone, near a hospital. Chief Minister Ashok Chavan too addressed the rally.
The code of conduct was trampled underfoot and the meeting was held next to a hospital, said BJP spokesperson Madhav Bhandari.
He added that the BJP brought the matter to the notice of the Election Commission but charged no action has been taken.
However,DCP (Zone II,Navi Mumbai) Ankush Shinde said the police have registered a complaint against the organiser. Arun Sheth Bhagat,a party functionary, has been booked under the Noise Pollution Act for organising an election rally within 100 metres of a hospital, Shinde said.
Roads leading to the government rural hospital,Panvel, were blocked because of the rally at the Shree Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj Ground. On an average, around 300 patients are examined in the OPD every day. Today, very few patients visited us as the roads to the hospital were blocked, PTI quoted a staff member as saying.
Congress general secretary Digvijay Singh said the Congress-NCP has been campaigning within the guidelines set by the Election Commission.
In Aurangabad, too,a rally with Gandhi was organised near a hospital,BJP leader Kirit Somaiya said.
