Rajan Raje, former Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) leader from Thane, will launch his own political party next week.
Raje has parted ways with MNS president Raj Thackeray over various party issues. It was in the MNS that he made a political foray after decades of work in labour unions. The leader had recently joined activists protesting against the Jaitapur nuclear power park.
Those supporting Raje said the new party would focus on ensuring no damage to environment while taking up development projects and improve the standard of living of citizens. Rajes decision could send ripples in the political circles, especially with the coming civic elections in Thane. It is the Shiv Sena that rules both the Thane Municipal Corporation and Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and the party will be fighting a bitter battle against the MNS and the Congress-NCP for these civic bodies.
Raje,a resident of Thane,is known to be a scholar. A law graduate who topped the scholarship examinations,Raje has a popular compilation of Marathi poems to his credit. An active union leader for over 25 years,he was motivated to enter politics by the fiery speeches of Thackeray and his fight for the Marathi people.
As a Lok Sabha candidate for th MNS in 2009,he had polled over one lakh votes, thereby ensuring the defeat of the Sena candidate. He was also nominated for the Assembly elections later that year, but did not get the seat.
He is expected to make a formal announcement on his party on Monday and the partys first conference is planned for Wednesday.
