After a brief lull, monsoon showers lashed the city again as low pressure winds from the east advanced towards the city. IMD has now issued a warning of heavy rainfall (between 70mm to 140mm) in Mumbai in the next 24 hours.
Meanwhile, the trough along the countrys west coast, which was responsible for the heavy rainfall over the weekend,is now said to be on the decline.
We are expecting another 24 hours of heavy rainfall and have warned authorities. The trough along the west, which had caused heavy rainfall in the Konkan region,is now feeble but low-pressure systems from the east (Madhya Pradesh) are approaching the city, causing the heavy rain, said IMD director V K Rajeev.
According to the civic bodys monsoon monitoring website,www.mumbaimonsoon.com,while most parts of the city remained wet on Wednesday, the weather station at the north-east boundary of the city, near the Panvel octroi naka, recorded the highest amount of rain for the day (over 100mm). Gawanpada in Mulund,a landslide-prone area in the north-eastern suburbs, also recorded rainfall of close to 100mm.
Central parts of Mumbai such as Kurla and Mumbai Central remained largely dry.
According to the IMD,during the day,South Mumbai received relatively light rain with only 21.8mm recorded. Santacruz recorded 46.4mm rainfall.
So far,by mid-July, the city has already received close to half the annual normal rainfall received each monsoon season. According to civic data, the island city has received 50.82 per cent of its annual normal rainfall and the suburbs have received 41.75 per cent of their annual normal rain.
