Western Railway is taking steps to make purified water available to commuters at food stalls of the suburban section. The WR administration has asked food stalls to install water purifiers before September 17. Defaulters are liable to attract a fine. Stall owners have been asked to install the water purifiers, or face a penalty.
“The railway ministry is concerned about hygienic food and pure water at every station for commuters,’’ said a senior official of the Western Railway.
“Every year, such orders are issued by Western Railway to install water purifiers but stall owners do not heed them. Western Railway administration is taking steps to implement these orders and has asked stall owners to install water purifiers by September 17,’’ said a senior official.
Besides, there will be a separate water purifier in the suburban section in Mumbai division as instructed by the Railway Board to Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation.
Commuters have welcomed the move to install water purifiers. “Water stored in a drum is given out in mugs. It is unhygienic. How do we know water being given us is pure,’’ said Chandrika Singh, a commuter.
“We have to purchase bottled water. I prefer water from a purifier,’’ said Bharat Dave, another commuter.
There were some problems though. One was lack of running water. Stall owners also said that the water stored by stalls was just enough to meet their own needs.
