Rahul Gandhi on Friday visited Chaityabhoomi in Dadar, accompanied by Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan and MPCC president Manikrao Thakre.

They spent around 15 minutes there and left after lighting candles, and paying tribute to Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar.

Earlier, three cars including two pilot vehicles brought them to the gate leading to the inner area.

Bhadant B Sanghapal, the Buddhist priest in-charge of Chaityabhoomi, said they were not informed of Rahul’s plan to visit the place.

“We did not know he was coming here. Around 8.30 am on Friday, police officers and members of the Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad came and checked the premises. We assumed some VVIP would be coming. Around 2.15 pm,Gandhi and the others came,” said Sanghapal.

“Chavan told me Gandhi wanted to pay tribute to Dr Ambedkar. All of them lit candles and put a garland around Ambedkar’s statue. They did not talk to anyone and neither did they talk among themselves. They maintained silence inside the area and followed all rules,” said Sanghapal.

Bhaskarrao Jadhav, who was present, said someone from the entourage tried clicking pictures of Rahul inside the area but was stopped. “Clicking pictures inside the area is not allowed and I told him to stop. The three took a stroll before leaving,” said Jadhav.

Niruti Kamble,a seller of books on life of Ambedkar, said he did not interact with anyone during the visit. “It was a quiet, short visit,” said Kamble.
