Professor kills wife,daughter; tries to end life

A college professor allegedly knifed his wife and nine-year-old daughter to death and attempted suicide at their Vardaman Gardens apartment in Dhokali,Thane on Monday.

A college professor allegedly knifed his wife and nine-year-old daughter to death and attempted suicide at their Vardaman Gardens apartment in Dhokali,Thane on Monday. Police said they found the woman and daughter dead when they reached the spot.

The husband,Sanjay Umbarkar,42,worked at Annasaeb Jadhav College in Dhamankar Naka of Bhiwandi while the wife,Swati Umbarkar,was an employee of BNN College,Bhiwandi. Police said the couple had frequent quarrels over petty issues and Monday’s incident seemed to be the fallout of such a quarrel.

Umbarkar is battling for his life at Thane’s Jupiter Hospital.

ACP PG Kendre of Thane police crime branch said the couple seemed to have got into a quarrel after they reached home from work.

‘’Their kids — a son and a daughter — were steppeing out of the house to play when Umbarkar pulled his wife into the bedroom and began stabbing her with a knife. Daughter Atharva ran towards the bedroom on seeing this and Umbarkar attacked her,too,” an officer said.

The son — Rigved (15) — managed to escape and he narrated the incident to the police.
