A 24-year-old man lodged at Arthur Road Jail passed away in hospital after falling ill on Friday. According to the N M Joshi police station, the deceased, Arvind Shivpi, had been in jail for three days and, on Friday evening, complained of stomach pain. “He was rushed to JJ Hospital but passed away there,” said Ahmad Pathan, senior inspector.
A post-mortem has not been conducted so far as police have been unable to locate his family. Pathan said Shivpi had recently been arrested for stealing a cellphone by the Churchgate railway police. Pathan said the autopsy would be video-recorded and the body handed over to his family. B K Upadhyay, Additional Director General of Police (Prisons), said, “If the post- mortem shows foulplay, then a magisterial inquiry will be instituted into the incident. We have not found anything suspicious in the CCTV cameras installed inside the jail premises.” ENS
