Pre-monsoon survey: MHADA declares 20 cessed buildings ‘dangerous’, issues eviction notices

The Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) on Wednesday declared 20 cessed buildings in Mumbai as “dangerous” and unfit for habitation.
The Mumbai Buildings Repairs and Reconstruction Board (MBRRB), a unit of MHADA, has completed its annual pre-monsoon survey of old and dilapidated cessed buildings in the city.
Following this, MBRRB listed 20 buildings as dangerous, of which four were declared dangerous last year as well.
Cessed properties are those in which tenants pay a tax to the housing authority, MBRRB, and that is used for repairing such buildings.
These 20 buildings collectively house 711 residents, including 494 residential and 217 non-residential occupants.
The board has already started taking action, with 36 residential tenants securing their own alternative accommodations and 46 residents relocated to transit camps.
Eviction notices have been issued to the remaining tenants, and the process of vacating the premises is going on.
The board plans to relocate 412 residents to transit camps.

The MBRRB has urged tenants to cooperate with evacuation efforts and adhere to safety instructions to prevent accidents and potential loss of life.
Additionally, residents have been asked to report in case of any signs of danger or accidents to the control room, which operates 24×7.
