THE prosecution on Monday claimed in the Bombay High Court that Rahul Raj Singh, the boyfriend of actor Pratyusha Banerjee, who allegedly committed suicide, is not cooperating with police in its investigation. Additional public prosecutor Usha Kejariwal informed the court that the government would engage a special public prosecutor to contest Singh’s pre-arrest bail plea, and sought time for it. Justice Mridula Bhatkar posted the hearing for April 25.
Singh had got interim relief after the High Court directed the Bangur Nagar police station not to arrest him till April 18. He has been booked under charges of abetment besides criminal intimidation and voluntarily causing hurt after Banerjee’s mother registered a complaint against him. A sessions court had rejected his anticipatory bail plea on April 7. The prosecution had argued that after Banerjee committed suicide, Singh evaded the police and got himself admitted in hospital.
The FIR says Banerjee and Singh were in a live-in relationship and Singh harassed her and took money from her. The prosecution also claims Singh assaulted her on several occasions and as a result of the torture, Banerjee committed suicide.
Police said on April 1, Singh had found the apartment he shared with Banerjee locked from inside. He asked a servant to enter the apartment from the balcony, who after getting inside, found her hanging from the ceiling fan with a dupatta. He has been accused by Banerjee’s parents of assaulting her, misusing her money and forbidding her from contacting her family.
