Prakash Jha files extortion complaint

Filmaker Prakash Jha has filed a complaint with the Amboli police,claiming he received extortion threats from two New York-based filmmakers.

Filmaker Prakash Jha has filed a complaint with the Amboli police,claiming he received extortion threats from two New York-based filmmakers.

According to the police,Jha allegedly received an e-mail and a few calls on his cellphone demanding $50,000 (Rs 3 crore) that he had borrowed from Pramod Bhanti and Devendra Singh to make a film. Work on the film called Farewell to Himalaya was to begin in 2000,but it did not take off eventually.

The police said at the time Jha was scripting the movie. According to his complaint,the two filmmakers have now allegedly issued threats and sent e-mails to him demanding $50,000 while threatening to malign him in the media unless he paid up,the police said.

Sources said the Amboli police are likely to hand over the case to the Mumbai Police Crime Branch’s Anti-Extortion Cell and Cyber Crime Cell to locate the IP (Internet Protocol) address of the alleged e-mail sent to Jha.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone 9) Pratap Dighavkar said,“An FIR was registered under Section 384 (punishment for extortion) and 120 B (punishment of criminal conspiracy) against the two filmmakers.”

“We have recorded Jha’s statement. He said he had taken the money but when the film did not take off,he returned it. But since it’s a financial dispute,we are conducting inquiries. We have also sent the e-mail for scrutiny,” added Dighavkar.
