In a bid to ensure that Mumbai roads stay pothole free during monsoon, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is set to work round the clock to fill potholes.
On Monday, Guardian Minister Mangal Prabhat Lodha reviewed the pothole situation in Mumbai at the civic headquarters, following heavy rainfall that has lashed the city in the past one week.
Following the meeting, it was decided that ward level teams formed under the watch of a nodal officer, who will be appointed at the level of assistant municipal commissioner, will track and keep a record of pothole patching in Mumbai.
Since Mumbai roads do not record heavy traffic movement at night, pothole patching will be carried out at night only. Civic officials said the basic idea is to fill all potholes within a 24-hour deadline. BMC has already allotted a Rs 2-crore fund to each municipal ward to patch potholes.
“It has also been decided that action will be taken against contractors if potholes appear on those roads whose maintenance they have been entrusted with,” said an official.
The review of roads was carried out in the wake of heavy rainfall, above 700 mm, that Mumbai has recorded in the last one week.
