The Kherwadi Police are awaiting medical reports to ascertain whether the accident that occurred early on Friday — in which a 24-year-old woman was killed and her NRI friend who was driving the car was injured — was the result of drink-driving.

Ankita Cheda,a resident of Vile Parle (West),died and her friend Jimal Garodiya (27),a US citizen, was seriously injured in the accident which took place near the Kherwadi Junction in Bandra (East) around 3.15 am on Friday. Garodiya has been booked for rash and negligent driving.

While Cheda was declared dead on arrival at Bhabha Hospital,Garodiya was admitted. Doctors said his condition is critical. He was shifted to Lilavati Hospital early on Saturday.

Senior inspector Avaduth Chawan said,“Garodiya’s friends have informed his parents about the accident. His parents are Green Card holders and landed in India on Saturday,” said Chawan.

The police suspect that this is a case of drink driving, but had refrained from making any statements as medical reports were still awaited.

Chawan said prima-facie,the episode was being treated as a case of drink-driving.

“The deceased and her friend were returning from a party. Friends of the duo were driving alongside in another car. However, they did not seem to be racing. We believe that Garodiya lost control of the vehicle” he said.
