Deonar police are probing a gang that kidnaps children and makes them beg.
The probe follows rescue of a 10-year-old boy who was allegedly kidnapped, drugged and found in rags in the company of two strangers in Colaba Wednesday.
The boy was rescued after he managed to make a call from the mobile phone of one of the strangers.
Deonar police have arrested Devidas Mehetre (54) and Roza Momin (38) for abducting the boy,who was reported missing by his father Mumtaz Baig,a launderer,on May 12. Baig received a call from his son Monday that he was being taken to Dubai.
We called back but found the mobile phone switched off, said police inspector Pandit Thackrey.
Based on call records of the number, police traced the phone to Qadir Shah Dargah in Colaba.
Further probe led them to Mehetre and Momin.
Police found that the boy was picked up from his neighbourhood by a man claiming to be a maulana. The man in his mid-fifties promised to take the boy to a mosque. But the boy told police he was first taken to Vashi and later to Belapur before he was left in the custody of Mehetre and Momin in Colaba.
The two arrested accused have told us they do not know the maulana. They claim they were just taking care of the boy, said Thackrey. A medical check-up revealed the boy was fed something that caused memory loss.
Only after a few hours of counseling the boy identified his father and revealed the entire episode, Thackrey said.
We are investigating the role of the duo in the begging racket. The boy has told us the maulana wanted him to beg, he added.
