A report released by the Praja Foundation on Thursday has revealed that the Mumbai Police Control Room, which fields hundreds of calls about crimes, harassment of women and other mishaps,is grossly understaffed, operating at almost half of its sanctioned strength.
According to Praja Foundations report, the Control Room has a sanctioned strength of 267 personnel but only has 127 serving policemen manning it,amounting to a 52 per cent deficit in manpower. The Control Room is the heart of policing process, and should be adequately manned, said Founding Trustee Nitai Mehta,Praja Foundation.
Assistant Commissioner of Police Bhagwan Chate,Mumbai Police Control Room, said while he was not aware of the exact percentage of manpower shortage, the existing staff was handling the Control Room well. The constables we have are graduates and post-graduates,and are bright and fast in learning. The shortage of staff does not affect the working of the control room, he said.
