A policeman, who was on duty on Juhu beach, saved two children from drowning in the sea on Friday night. Senior police officers have decided to felicitate the policeman, who put his life in danger and ventured into deep waters to save the children.
According to the police, Sameer Pawar, 10, and Bhim Kale, 7, ventured into the sea on Friday evening to swim from the Juhu Koliwada landing point end of Juhu beach. Soon they were trapped in the strong currents of the sea and were unable to swim to safety.
Police constable Vishnu Bhaurao Bele from the Santacruz police station, who was on duty on the beach, spotted the children drowning. He jumped into the water and pulled them to safety.
After receiving primary medication, the children were handed over to their parents. The children, who live in Govandi, had left their homes without informing their families and had come to Juhu beach for fun, police said.
“When we asked about their parents, they did not tell us out of fear and gave wrong addresses. We finally managed to get information about their families and handed them over to them,” said Rajendra Kane, senior inspector at Santacruz police station.
“Bele did a brave job, making the police department proud,” Kane added.
The police have deployed additional personnel on Juhu beach for patrolling during the monsoon to avoid such incidents. Tourists are restricted from entering the beach during high tides.
