Police constable in Maharashtra’s Palghar held for alleged rape of woman at police quarters

As per the woman’s complaint, when she came to the police station on November 29 as part of an interrogation, the accused constable took her to police quarters, located nearly 150 metres from the police station, and raped her.

Nearly a week after the alleged rape, senior officers came to know about the allegations and ordered the police to track the victim.

Superintendent of Police (Palghar) Yatin Deshmukh said that they recorded the victim’s statement and filed a First Information Report (FIR) against the constable on December 7. “On the same day, he was placed under arrest on charges of rape, and the inspector in charge of the police station was transferred and attached to police headquarters,” Deshmukh said.

Investigation has revealed that the victim and the accused constable had communicated with each other on WhatsApp in the days following the alleged rape, and the police are going through the chats, according to a source.

“The accused and the victim hail from the same community, and the constable and the victim’s mother were known to each other,” the source said.

CCTV footage at the police station reveals the woman entering the police station on the day of the incident, the officer said.
