The state will construct three new jails and increase the number of barracks in the existing ones. Home Minister RR Patil said in the legislative council that the jails in the state,with a capacity of accommodating 23,000,were overcrowded. The Arthur Road prison,the capacity of which is 804,had 2,091 inmates now. Similarly,the Thane jail accommodates 2,500 prisoners against a capacity of 1,105. Patil said the government was also considering a proposal to instal CCTV cameras in jails to curb malpractices.
