Pipeline leak leads to oil spill

ONGC officials said the magnitude of the leak was yet to be assessed.

A pipeline carrying gas condensate from the Bombay High offshore oilfield to the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) Ltd premises in Uran led to a leak late on Sunday night, resulting in spillage of oil in the sea. ONGC officials said the magnitude of the leak was yet to be assessed.

The leak was reported around 10.30 am on Sunday, after residents of the area near the sea shore at Uran saw a layer of an oily liquid on the water.

“Our crisis management team reached the spot of the leakage and the leaks were plugged. We are appointing an agency to clear the spilled oil and are still assessing aspects such as how much oil was spilled and how far the spill spread,” said an ONGC official.

Information about the leak was also conveyed to the Uran police and several teams were rushed to the spot so that the shore could be cordoned off till the situation was brought under control.

As gas condensate is flammable, the area was declared safe only after 12 hours, police said.

The ONGC’s report on the magnitude of the incident is expected on Tuesday and inquiries are on to check how the pipeline sprung a leak.
