Led by Captain Pradeep Patel, who won his singles match against a player with a better handicap,an inspired Willingdon Sports Club swamped all opposition to win the 13th Grover Vineyards Inter-Club Golf Championships, the symbol of golf supremacy in Western India, which concluded at the refurbished greens of the Willingdon Sports Club,on Sunday.
Willingdon SC,who had won the inaugural edition of this event in 1996,came up with a clinical and professional show, their consistent performances on both days helping them tally 38 ½ points to emerge convincing winners over second placed Poona Golf Club (24 ½) by a whopping 14 points. A later surge by BPGC could not make amends for their woeful performance on the opening day and they finished with 18 ½ points and the wooden spoon, behind US Club (19).
WSC won all their three singles encounters, tallied four points in the foursomes and 8 ½ in the fourballs to collect 18 ½ points, nearly as good as their opening days performance, which had fetched them 20 points.
Thirteen-year-old nine handicapper Dhruv Toshniwal, who had won his foursomes match earlier, continued his great showing for Willingdon, winning his singles match against Poona Golf Clubs Sumanta Gupta. Also winning his singles encounter was captain Patel, with a handicap of 15,prevailing over 12 handicapper Dilip Sharma of BPGC. The third singles win for WSC was gained by nine handicaper Rohit Poddar who got the better of US Clubs Capt. K S Sekhon.
BPGC made a game fight through Shivas Nath and Amit Nigam, but it was just not enough to move them out of fourth place. While Shivas Nath paired with Bunty Khanna to win their fourball against N S Bains and Raman Singh of US Club,Nigam won his singles match against Brig B J Singh for BPGCs only singles win over two days.
Results: Willingdon SC 38 ½ (singles 12,foursomes 10,fourballs 16 1/2); Poona Golf Club 24 ½ (singles 4,foursomes 5 ½,fourballs 15); US Club 19 (singles 6,foursomes 3,fourballs 10); BPGC 18 ½ (singles 2½,foursomes 7 ½,fourballs 8 1/2).
