Three people, including the former chairman of a panchayat samiti of a village in Thane Rural, allegedly chopped off a 27-year-old man’s hands with a sickle Friday over an old enmity in the Murbad taluka.

The Thane rural police Saturday arrested two of the three accused and are looking for Shrikant Dhumal, a former chairman of a panchayat samiti.

Sushil Bhoir, a villager from Murbad taluka, used to work as a bouncer with Dhumal, said the Murbad police. Both belonged to the same village and are also related, as per the police.

According to the police, Bhoir had left the job over some dispute with Dhumal, who did not like it and developed grudges against him. Bhoir shifted to some other village after quitting the job fearing Dhumal, the police said.

“On Friday, when Bhoir was visiting his old home in the village, Dhumal somehow learned about it. Along with his two accomplices Ankush Khadikar and Nitin Dhumal, he intercepted the autorickshaw Bhoir was travelling in on the Murbad-Barvi Dam road in the Devape village and started beating him up,” said a police officer.

Nitin then allegedly chopped off Bhoir’s hands with a sickle, and after abandoning him on the roadside, the trio left the spot, the police said.

A passerby spotted injured Bhoir, who was screaming for help, and he was rushed to a local hospital and later referred to Sion Hospital. He is stable now, the police said.
