Senior Congress leader P Chidambaram addresses a press conference in Mumbai on Monday.
Former finance minister and senior Congress leader P Chidambaram, while speaking about the completion of 9 years of the Narendra Modi-led government on Monday, underlined issues of constitutional governance, security, economy, social divisions, and inflation that reign supreme in the country.
Speaking on the recent decision to withdraw the Rs, 2000 note, seven years after its introduction, he said, “The thoughtless introduction of the Rs 2,000 note, and the mortifying spectacle of withdrawing, it have cast a doubt on the stability of India’s currency.”
While referring to the recent violence in Manipur, Chidambaram highlighted the “silence of the NDA government as the situation in the country deteriorates year after year”. “PM has all the time to visit Japan and Australia but he cannot visit Manipur. He hasn’t yet uttered a single word on the happenings there. He should have held all party meeting. The Home Minister should have rushed there at the earliest,” he said.

Speaking about the economy, he added: “The first three quarters of 2022-23 recorded growth rates of 13.2, 6.3 and 4.4 per cent, which is a declining trend. The present situation is a far cry from the average of 9 per cent growth rate that marked the boom years between 2004 and 2009. The Indian economy is growing modestly at a much-reduced pace facing serious issues of unemployment, inflation, widening inequalities and stumbling welfare programmes.”
He further said, “The Oposition is compelled to raise very serious questions about raging unemployment, persistent inflation, widening inequalities and stumbling welfare programmes. The all India unemployment rate is currently at 7.45 per cent and the labour force participation rate is about 48 per cent. Prices are elevated and people are consuming less.”
‘Freedom of speech severely curbed through intimidation’
The Congress leader alleged that under the NDA government, freedom of speech and expression of citizens have been severely curbed through intimidation and false cases.
“The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and/or its affiliated organisations have fuelled these trends with hyper-nationalism, vigilantism, religious intolerance, vandalism, hate speeches and extra-judicial actions,” he said, while adding that “bulldozer justice has replaced natural justice”.
