Four days after an explosion at an aluminium moulding unit claimed seven lives in Saki Naka, police have arrested its owner for allegedly running business without permission. He has been charged under IPC section 304 (A) (culpable homicide not amounting to murder).
A compressor stored in the unit in K K Compound on Kherani Road exploded in the early hours of March 29,causing one of its walls to collapse on an adjoining house where a family of six was sleeping. The accident killed five members of the family and two labourers at the unit.
Tuesday evening,Saki Naka Police registered a complaint against unit owner Hiren Dedhia (35).
The complaint was registered on the basis of technical reports received from BMC and the fire brigade indicating the compressor exploded because of overheating.
Dedhia was arrested late Tuesday night. He has been remanded in police custody till next Monday, said senior inspector Samadhan Dhanedhar.
He was running the unit without BMC permission and in violation of several safety norms. Also, the compressor was stored in a small closed space, which presented a risk to human life in case of a mishap. All evidence goes against Dedhia, he said.
