Almost three months after the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) undertook massive slum demolition drive along water pipelines, the civic body on Thursday announced that it has cleared around 2,250 illegal shanties from across the city.

“We have removed 235 shanties from Bandra Terminus and 225 from Sahar area. These slums were near water pipelines. Besides,we have removed slums which had proliferated in Collectors land from areas like Malwani,Chembur,Juhu and Dahisar,” said Suhas Karvande, deputy municipal commissioner (encroachment removal).

In order to ensure a long term solution for encroachment, the civic body will soon invite tenders to get security services in these areas. “We will study each area and see what kind of security measures can be employed here. We are inviting the tenders on the same. We will depute the work to a contractor for five years to look after the security,” said Additional Municipal Commissioner,BMC,Anil Diggikar.

In addition, the civic body will also consider the option of fencing areas around water pipelines and other spots where encroachment is high. “The civic standing committee is expected to discuss the issue in fortnight’s time. We will proceed from there,” said Diggikar.

The Bombay High Court in January had rapped the BMC for compromising with citizens’ safety and health by allowing slums on water pipes, following which Municipal Commissioner Jairaj Phatak ordered immediate removal of slums constructed after 2000 along pipelines. While there are 15,789 hutments along pipelines in Mumbai,6,999 of them are said to have been constructed after 2000.
