The Opposition MLAs Tuesday staged a walkout in the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly claiming that the state government is not serious in taking action in the case relating to the death of a Dalit man in Parbhani and over the killing of a sarpanch from Beed district.
On the second day of the winter session, Congress MLA Nitin Raut asked Speaker Rahul Narwekar to allow him to talk on the custodial death of the 35-year-old man who was among the 50 people arrested by the Parbhani police after violence broke out following the alleged vandalising of a replica of the Constitution.
Raut criticised the police and the district administration over the handling of the situation, claiming that the Dalit community was targeted. He also demanded that the House should discuss the issue Tuesday.
Replying to Raut, Narwekar said that the Assembly has already decided to have a discussion under rule 101 on Wednesday considering the seriousness of the incident.
Unhappy over the Speaker’s reply, Congress MLA Nana Patole, who had raised the Parbhani violence issue on Monday, reiterated that the House should hold the debate on Tuesday itself.
“The law and order situation across the state will further deteriorate if the government does not take action against the concerned people and assure the state for the restoration of law and order by instilling confidence among the Parbhani residents,” he said.
Following this, the Speaker reiterated that the debate will take place on Wednesday. NCP (SP) MLA Sandeep Kshirsagar raised the issue of killing of sarpanch from Beed district and alleged that one perpetrators are still absconding.
“The administration should arrest the culprits and lodge a case for murder. The residents of Beed would organise agitation soon if action is not taken against Walmik Karad for his alleged involvement in the killing of a sarpanch,” he said.
The opposition made repeated attempts urging the Speaker to take up the Parbhani and Beed issues for discussion. However, the Speaker rejected their demand.
Patole announced that the opposition is staging a walkout citing that the government “lacks seriousness”. He also announced that the Congress legislators will boycott the proceedings of the house for the entire day.
After the walkout, ruling BJP legislator from Kej constituency from Beed district Namita Mundada shared opposition’s concern over the murder of a sarpanch. She urged Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to immediately take action for the arrest of the accused.
