There will be a civic school offering Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) curriculum in each ward of Mumbai soon, said the Education Department of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), while seeking information from local education officers of each ward on available school buildings that are fit to apply for approval for the same.
After having successfully run 11 schools offering the CBSE curriculum, the civic body’s education wing has rolled out the latest plan to affiliate one school from each ward to the CBSE board. “Local education officers have been asked to submit data on the number of school buildings in their respective area, and which of them could meet the infrastructural requirements important for the CBSE approval. Accordingly, steps would be taken after collating the information,” said an officer from the education department.
Mentioning that there has always been a plan to start more civic schools offering non-state board curriculum in the city, the officer said, “Urban parents are more inclined towards sending their children to non-state board schools.
When BMC started these schools, the plan was to offer such popular curriculums to students from underprivileged backgrounds in civic school, and generally are not be able to take admissions to high-profile non-state board schools.
After starting to offer non-state board curriculums in a few civic schools, the plan was to replicate the model in others. Now, we are checking whether it would be possible.” Civic schools have traditionally been offering state-board curriculum.
BMC, however, started the trend of offering a more popular non-state board curriculum in civic schools in 2020. Even as it started with one school each affiliated to the CBSE and the Indian Certificate of School Education (ICSE) curriculum, soon 10 new CBSE schools were started, following a demand.
The BMC currently runs 11 schools affiliated to the CBSE, and one school each offering ICSE, Cambridge and International Baccalaureate (IB).
Confirming the plan, D Gangadharan, BMC deputy commissioner (Education), said, “It is currently in a nascent stage as we are only collecting information.”
