Acting on the Bombay High Courts order,BMC demolished an illegal structure at the Laxmi Industrial estate in Andheri on Thursday. According to civic officials, there were 234 illegal structures there which had extended their mezzanine floor up to 200 square feet. Gala number 138 at building number 5 and 9 faced the axe. Civic officials maintained that it will take action against the other illegal structures too.
A PIL filed by the NGO Disha had challenged and sought demolition of unauthorised alterations and adjustments in the high-profile belt of Andheri-Versova-Jogeshwari. Acting on the High courts order, the civic body had sent showcause notices to demolish 454 such structures all in one go. Interestingly, this belt is mostly inhabited by film and TV stars.
According to civic officials, illegal additions, both vertical and horizontal,to a large number of Low Income group houses in the extensive sprawl of 4,232 plots at Adarsh Nagar,Sardar Vallabhai Patel and Laxmi Industrial Estate will be razed soon. While 273 structures at Laxmi Industrial Estate have got the notice,91 structures at Adarsh Nagar and 90 structures at SVP Nagar have got the notice.
The LIG houses were allotted by the Maharashtra Housing & Area Development Authority (MHADA) in the 1980s and societies and individuals were told to stick to the original plan. However,MHADA officials state that over the years the structures were sold off to TV stars etc who modified the original structure.
