Merely two days after the Bombay High Court came down heavily on the state CID for dragging its feet in an alleged assault case involving ex-NCP MLA Pappu Kalani’s son Omi,the agency on Thursday informed the court that it has arrested Omi Kalani.
According to the state Criminal Investigation Bureau,Kalani was arrested on Thursday morning and would be produced before a court for securing custody.
The High Court was hearing the case of one Sunil Sukhramani who alleges that Omie Kalani took part in an assault on him,to dissuade his aunt Neetu Sukhramani from contesting from a ward in Ulhasnagar.
Sukhramani alleges that he was assaulted because Omie’s mother Jyoti had decided to contest from the same ward.
On August 21,the court had noted that the facts of the case “disclose a sorry state of affairs” and questioned why the state CID had not arrested Omi Kalani in spite of a High Court order rejecting his anticipatory bail application.
A Bench of Justice V M Kanade and Justice P D Kode had noted that such incidents send a wrong signal to society. Ruing that because of such incidents, some people are tempted to take law into their own hands, the judges even recalled the recent violence at Azad Maidan on August 11.
Sukhramani in his petition demanded that the case be transferred from the state CID to the Central Bureau of Investigation.
On August 21,the judges directed the Thane Commissioner of Police to provide protection to Sukhramani as well as the complainant in the case,Prakash Kalwani.
The court has kept the case pending and posted it for hearing after two weeks.
