NZ lensman jumps to death at Bandra hotel

Police said John Richard Brimley was depressed due to family issues. He was undergoing treatment. A doctor told police that he was insomniac and was recently put on anti-depressants.

A 56-year-old photographer from New Zealand allegedly committed suicide by jumping off his 17th floor room at Taj Lands End in Bandra late Monday night.

The deceased,John Richard Brimley,was suffering from depression and is believed to have been undergoing treatment,said police.

“His friends and colleagues at the hotel said he was depressed over family matters. The photographers were staying in different rooms of the hotel. A doctor told us that Brimley was an insomniac and regularly consumed sleeping pills. He had recently taken to anti-depressants,” said a police official.

According to Bandra police,Brimley arrived in the city on May 9 as part of a team of 25 photographers for a Disney photo shoot. The hotel’s security found him in a pool of blood at the basement around 11 pm Monday,and informed the manager. Brimley was rushed to Bhabha Hospital but was declared dead on arrival. Police are still probing all angles as no suicide note was found on his body or in his room.

“We have informed Brimley’s family in New Zealand. They are on their way to Mumbai. We have also informed the New Zealand embassy,” said Pratap Dighavkar,DCP. Brimley’s body has been sent to Cooper Hospital for postmortem.
