The Maharashtra State Nurses Association on Thursday called off their stop work agitation after they received a written assurance from the state government on meeting their demands.

According to Sumitra Tote, general secretary of the Maharashtra State Nurses Association, the meeting held by Dheeraj Kumar, Secretary, Medical Education, Maharashtra was a positive and constructive one.

“We have been given a written assurance that our demands would be met,” Tote said. Across the state more than 25,000 nurses had joined the protests with over 370 from Pune’s B J Government Medical College and Sassoon General Hospital and another 300 from Baramati’s Government Medical College.

The nurses’ association had demanded parity in wages under the 7th pay commission and a stop to the contractual hiring of nurses. The state medical education secretary had told The Indian Express earlier that they would be sharing the copy of the minutes of the meeting between Hasan Mushrif, State Medical Education Minister and the nurses association – where the former had agreed to meet various demands.

Tote stated that they had another round of discussions on Friday morning with the Medical Education Secretary and other top officials from the Directorate of Medical Education and Research. “They responded to our demands and the  discussion was a very constructive one,” Tote said adding that they have now called off their strike.

At B J Government Medical College and Sassoon General Hospital, Arifa Shaikh, president, Maharashtra State Nurses Association, Pune Chapter said that they had called off the stir and would join duty on Friday morning.
