In the past 15 years, the number of general body meetings of held by the mayor has been on a decline, shows data from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).
From March 2012 (following BMC elections) to August 2013,incumbent mayor Sunil Prabhu called 90 meetings but only 60 were held. This excludes the nine that were adjourned.
According to the data, from March 1997 to August 1998,then mayor Vishaka Raut called 74 meetings, but in all,94 were held.
Following this, for the first 18 months of the next five-year term which began in 2002,the then mayor Mahadeo Deole, called for 96 general body meetings,of which 85 were held.
In 2007-2008,then mayor Shubha Raul called for 94 meetings,of which 25 per cent were never held.
Congress corporator Mohsin Haider has written to Prabhu, seeking more meetings. Please raise the quality of our meetings.
We have a lot of issues in our wards and the meetings give us an opportunity to highlight these. If we dont have enough meetings, citizens complaints remain unheard, he wrote.
MLAs Ravindra Vaikar and Gopal Shetty, who were corporators in 1997-1998,had an opportunity to rise as they could raise their issues in the BMC house meetings. These meetings were held at least five times a month. Now,in the past 18 months, only two meetings a month have been held. Most of these are spent in clearing the backlog. Corporators are barely given a chance to discuss important problems, he said.
Prabhu, however, put the ball back into the corporators court. Before a meeting is held, corporators submit their points of discussions, which are added to the agenda. So far,I have seen that whatever is on the agenda can be cleared in two meetings. If they want more meetings, they have to raise more issues, he said.
