Often considered as a luxury meant only for the economically well-to-do,cosmetic surgery in the city will now be within the reach of the poor. The Plastic Surgery department of the state-run JJ Hospital has obtained an advanced laser platform to perform a wide range of corrective surgeries. It scharges as little as Rs 200 per sitting. An equivalent surgery at most private clinics will cost around Rs 5,000. Acne treatment, scar removal, hair removal, mole removal and burns treatment have been the most common surgeries performed by these doctors over the past two months.
The department purchased the equipment a couple of months ago and has already treated 80 patients, including some television actors. Cosmetic treatment is not only necessarily for beautification. Deep scars could also cause further complications such as infections and hindrance in physical actions. The equipment has four different lasers, which are used depending on the kind of treatment. Scar removal can be done in a few minutes, said Dr Rajat Kapoor, associate professor, plastic surgery department.
Kapoor said while the majority of patients have been from poor economic backgrounds,it is a challenge to explain to them the importance of post treatment maintenance. Probably because of the cost, patients do take the treatment lightly at times. It is important to be cautious post treatment such as avoiding sun exposure or extreme climate to ensure that further complications do not take place, Kapoor said.
JJ Hospital on Monday also announced improved facilities in its surgery departments, medical store and central laboratory. The departments now have better interiors and are also better equipped with instruments, Dean of JJ Hospital,Dr T P Lahane said.
