There is no difference in opinion between the Congress and NCP over the presence of Amitabh Bachchan at the inauguration of an arm of the Bandra-Worli Sea Link,NCP leader and Deputy Chief Minister Chhagan Bhujbal told the Legislative Council on Friday.

“MSRDC had invited Bachchan. He had come as any other invitee. It was the CM and Dy CM who inaugurated the sea link. There is no difference of opinion in the government over the matter,” said Bhujbal.

The row over Bachchan being invited was raised in both Houses but no discussion on it was allowed in the Assembly. BJP MLA Nana Patole tried to raise the issue, but presiding officer Girish Bapat overruled, and continued with calling attention motions. In the Legislative Council,Shiv Sena MLC Neelam Gorhe raised the matter citing media reports of differences between the Congress and NCP over the Bollywood star’s presence at the function. She said the House would like to know what had happened.

Congress MLC Bhai Jagtap said it was not of any significance and there were other, grave matters that needed discussion. Reacting,Sena MLC Kiran Pawaskar remarked: “After 26/11,Bollywood had decided the fate of chief ministers. We are worried about the current CM.” He was apparently referring to the exit of Former CM Vilasrao Deshmukh after he visited the attack spots along with a Bollywood filmmaker.

Bachchan’s presence at the function had annoyed some Congress leaders, who had questioned the propriety of inviting him,as he was Gujarat’s tourism ambassador. The NCP had justified his presence saying he was an icon. PWD (Public Undertakings) Minister Jaydatta Kshirsagar (NCP) had said Bachchan and cricket icon Sachin Tendulkar had been considered,Bachchan had confirmed his presence and was, therefore, invited.
