To commemorate the completion of 150 years of Vande Mataram, the Maharashtra BJP is organising mass singing of the national song at 150 places in the state. While Prime Minister Narendra Modi will lead the mass singing of Vande Mataram in New Delhi at 9.30 am on Friday, Union minister Nitin Gadkari, other ministers, and elected representatives will join the mass singing across Maharashtra on Friday.
State BJP chief Ravindra Chavan said on Thursday, “The national song, Vande Mataram, holds historic significance as it played a great role in inculcating nationalism and inspired thousands to revolt and fight against the British rule in pre-Independent India. Therefore, it is apt that we celebrate the national song across the state.”
“At 150 places in Maharashtra, there will be mass singing of Vande Mataram. The entire song will be sung throughout the state,” he added.
While Gadkari will lead the BJP state unit in the singing Vande Mataram at his hometown, Nagpur, minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule will lead the programme in Akola. Ravindra Chavan will lead the singing in Thane, and minister Ganesh Naik in Raigad. In Pune, Union minister Murlidhar Mohol and ministers Chandrakant Patil, Ashish Shelar will join the mass singing. Ministers Radhakrishna Vikhe-Patil (Ahilyanagar), Shivendraraje Bhosale (Satara), Girish Mahajan (Jalgaon), Jaikumar Rawal (Dhule), and Pankaja Munde (Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar) will also lead the mass singing of the national song.
Vande Mataram, written by Bankimchandra Chatterjee, will complete 150 years on Friday. The national song was written on November 7 in 1875. It first appeared in the literary journal Bandadarshan as part of Chatterjee’s famous novel Anandmath. According to a note shared by the BJP, the song invokes the motherland as the embodiment of strength, divinity, and prosperity, and gives poetic expression to India’s awakening spirit of unity and self-respect. It became an enduring symbol of devotion to the nation, the note added.
