The Bombay High Court Thursday directed the Chief Secretary of the Maharashtra government to convene a meeting of all authorities from whom land and buildings can be procured, for the purpose of setting up of night shelters by the BMC in the city.
“We direct the Chief Secretary to convene a meeting of BMC, Mumbai Port Trust, Central and Western Railways, Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) and Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), to ensure that land and building are made available to BMC,” said Justices A S Oka and A K Menon.
The court was hearing a PIL filed by an NGO Homeless Collective. The Chief Secretary has also been asked to address a letter to the collectors of Mumbai suburban districts over the issue of setting up shelters. The collectors have also been asked to attend the meeting.
“This meeting should be convened within two months from now. The state government should also call upon all authorities to provide land and buildings for setting up of night shelters by BMC,” said the HC.
