NIFT students sore over ‘massive’ hike in semester fee

OVER 750 students from the Mumbai centre of National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT),Kharghar,on Monday started a strike against a “massive” fee hike introduced by the institute recently.

OVER 750 students from the Mumbai centre of National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT),Kharghar,on Monday started a strike against a “massive” fee hike introduced by the institute recently. The students have threatened to stay away from the classes and skip lectures till the hike is rolled back.

The students claim that the semester fee was increased recently from Rs 40,000 to Rs 75,000 arbitrarily. Students were irked that the increase was made applicable to all the students and not just freshers, which was usually the case.

“There is fee hike every year,we understand, but how can they hike fees for existing students. Where will we get loans from now,” said Bhavik Mehta,a third-year fashion designing student.

The decision on the fee hike was announced recently by email and it was also mentioned that the revised fee will not only be applicable for new but also to the existing students.

Students argued that they could bear a 10 per cent increase, but a hike of around 50 -90 per cent was not agreeable. In fact, students of NIFT centre in Hyderabad,Gandhi Nagar,Shillong were too are already protesting the same issue.

Another student,Sonata Deb,said,“They cannot have a hike of over 50 per cent for existing students. This is unfair to us. We will not attend classes till this hike is rolled back.”

Each NIFT has its own fee structure and in NIFT Mumbai, students are burdened by around Rs 35,000 per semester.

The first year students will be hit most by the new fee structure as they have to pay the increased fee not only now but also brace up for 10 per cent hike every year on the existing fee.

Students will also have to face an additional burden of Rs 2,000 under examination fee while library fee and insurance premium have also been hiked.

While the NIFT authorities justified their move by citing that the fee structure was still lower as compared to institutes like National Institute of Design (NID),students refused to buy the argument that fee was still low compared to NID and other such institutes .

NIFT,which was functioning under the ministry of textiles recently, lost the affiliation over financing problems.

According to some students, the board of NIFT then decided to break ties with the ministry and collect the “required” money from students.

Nilima Rani Singh, director,NIFT Mumbai, said,“There is some misconception among the students. The fee has been increased by a mere 10 percent. What they are saying is partially correct, they used to pay Rs 40,000 as the semester fees but the total fees used to come upto Rs 66,000 after the fee hike it will come to Rs 75,000. We are trying to negotiate with the protesting students and will soon resolve the issue.”
