On Sunday, Maharashtra got a new Leader of Opposition in Jitendra Awhad, who replaced Ajit Pawar. The 59 year old Awhad, who is a three time MLA from Mumbra, is a close associate of NCP chief Sharad Pawar and had taken the plunge into politics through student activism protesting against rising tuition fees in colleges in 1982.

Starting his political career with the Congress, Awhad held positions such as chief secretary and general secretary NSUI, Maharashtra and also served as general secretary of all India NSUI in 1991. In 1996 Awhad was appointed the Maharashtra Youth Congress president.
