The newly built Air Traffic Control (ATC) tower at Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport (CSIA) commenced operations with the Airport Authority of India (AAI) taking possession from Wednesday. At 330 ft,the new towers stands 100 ft taller than the old one and offers better surveillance, say officials.

At a time,10 air traffic controllers will work in a shift. In all,75 controllers have been trained to handle operations from the new tower.

The new wishbone-shaped tower offers a 360° view,five-mile visibility and a clear view of both runaways. Built on an area of 2,800 sq m,the new ATC tower can handle 750 landings and control over 960 flights, including international overflying traffic.

“The equipment is more or less the same. The new tower offers a better view, thereby improving surveillance. The tower was ready in October but we had to install the equipment and train our staff. With the training complete, the monitoring and control of flights will be done from the new ATC,” said A B Joshi,Joint General Manager,AAI.

The new tower, built by the Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL),a joint venture between GVK-led consortia and AAI,was inaugurated on October 19 last year.

The old ATC will no longer be used for flight monitoring. MIAL plans to demolish the structure to make way for new taxiways at the airport.
