Nationalist Congress Party corporator (NCP) in the Mira-Bhayander Municipal Corporation, Vandana Chakre, her son Amol Chakre and another man, were arrested by the Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB) on Wednesday for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 2 lakh from a home owner, said officers.
Officers of the ACB’s Thane Range said that Vandana had been approached for help this month by a man whose home had been encroached upon.
The complainant, unwilling to pay a bribe, approached the ACB.
After the complaint was verified, ACB officials told the complainant to speak to the accused and prepared to lay a trap.
“Vandana had at first asked to be paid Rs. 7 lakh but later settled at Rs. 2 lakh. Vandana, Amol and a friend Ramkumar Rai, were caught red-handed accepting the money in a trap laid on Wednesday afternoon,” said an ACB officer.
Vandana had previously courted controversy in 2011 when she had said during the corporation’s general body meeting, that Jains should leave Mira-Bhayander if they had a problem with the presence of mutton shops.
She had then been served a show-cause notice by the party.
