The Maharashtra National Cadet Corps (NCC) is looking to increase its strength by over 20,000 over the next two to three years, said Major General Vivek Tyagi, Additional Director General of Maharashtra Directorate, NCC.

Speaking at an interaction with the media at the NCC Group Headquarters in Pune on Thursday, he said this increase would take the Maharashtra NCC’s strength to over 1.2 lakh.

“Maharashtra Directorate has an enrolled strength of about 1 lakh plus cadets in all three wings—NCC air wing, naval wing, and the army wing. In the next two to three years, our intent towards reaching out to more colleges and schools involves enrolling 20,000 more candidates. So, we are looking at around 1.21 lakh to 1.22 lakh cadet strength during this period. We will also focus on the remote localities and the border coastal areas so that the schools and colleges there can be brought under the ambit of NCC and they can focus on youth empowerment,” said Major General Tyagi.

Major General Tyagi visited the NCC group headquarters in Pune on Thursday to review preparations for the Republic Day Camp (RDC) 2026 and interact with NCC cadets, officers, and staff. During the visit, the General Officer was briefed by Colonel Vineet Midha, Officiating Group Commander, on the selection methodology, training processes, and overall preparation strategy being implemented to groom cadets for the upcoming Republic Day Camp. Major General Tyagi expressed satisfaction with the systematic approach and high standards adopted by the Pune Group.

He also inspected ongoing training activities, cultural practices, and administrative arrangements. The General Officer emphasized that the proud legacy of the Maharashtra Directorate as the Champion Directorate must continue, calling upon cadets and staff to maintain the Directorate’s tradition of outstanding performance at national-level camps.

Speaking about modernisation of the NCC syllabus, Major General Tyagi said, “We have recently revised the entire syllabus of NCC and introduced a lot of contemporary topics… We have put a lot of focus on physical fitness and mental aspects also because…today’s youth faces a lot of complex challenges.”

“We are training cadets on operating drones. We are exposing them to the entire technology. The aim is to broaden their horizon on modern technology, AI and other related stuff and then decide the path for themselves.”
