The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) on May 31 arrested the mastermind of a drug trafficking syndicate from New Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International airport, from where he was attempting to escape to Bangkok.
Officials said the arrested, Ummer Siddik Daigoli, was facing a look-out circular (LOC) after his role was revealed by five persons who were arrested from a hotel near the Mumbai airport for allegedly possessing nearly three kilograms of charas, which they were illegally exporting to Doha in Qatar through a courier service.
The NCB officials revealed that the five persons — Muhammed Khashiful Minhaj, Zainudden CA, Alphy Manjot, Atul Sanjay Rokade and Jamshad Mallick Kuppatil — were arrested in 2019 after a team from the Mumbai’s zonal unit on October 31, 2019, conducted a raid at an hotel in Marol at Andheri (East).
Following the searches, 2.763 kilogram charas and 83 strips of Pregabalin capsules I.P Lyrica 150 mg were seized from a parcel concealed in a cricket kit. The narcotics were destined to be delivered in Qatar, said the NCB officials.
During the course of investigation, the role of one Ummer Siddik Daigoli was revealed. The NCB said that he was in constant touch with Minhaj, Zainuddeen and Kuppatil over phone. Kuppatil also revealed that Daigoli had instructed him to hand over the consignment of approximately 3 kg charas to Minhaj, who was further directed to send it to Doha in Qatar through Eagle Logistic courier.
The profit from the sale of the narcotics was to be shared between Kuppatil and Daigoli.
Later, when the NCB officials managed to get more details of Daigoli, notices were issued to him but as he did not respond to any of them. He also failed to appear before the investigating officera nd the agency issued an LOC against him, suspecting that he would try to escape from the country.
“On May 30, when he was trying to fly to Bangkok, the Bureau of Immigration officials identified him at New Delhi Airport, cancelled his boarding pass and informed NCB Mumbai Zonal unit,” NCB officials said.
Accordingly, Daigoli was handed over to the NCB’s Mumbai team. He was arrested at 9.50 pm on May 31. Daigoli was then produced before a court in New Delhi and was brought to Mumbai on transit remand. He was then produced before the court in Mumbai.
In a plea seeking his three-day custody, the NCB officials said, “The revelations made by the above respondent (Daigoli) and the accused persons are to be verified…” Daigoli was then remanded in NCB custody.
